World Photography Day

18th August 2021

Thursday 19th August marks World Photography Day; a time for professionals and amateurs to celebrate their appreciation of and passion for photography.

The day has been celebrated every year since 2010.

A History of Photography

In 1837, Joseph Nicephore Niepce and Louis Daguerre invented Daguerreotype – a photographic process. On 9th January 1839, The French Academy of Sciences announced the daguerreotype process, later purchasing the patent and giving it as ‘a gift to the world’ on 19th August 1839. Hence why World Photography Day is celebrated on this date.

The definition of photography is literally “drawing the light”, the word coined by the British scientist Sir John Herschel in 1839.

The first colour photograph was produced in 1861, when Thomas Sutton created and combined three monochrome images using different coloured filters (green, blue and red).

Created by the World Photography Organisation, the Sony World Photography Awards are an authoritative voice in the industry. Celebrating the best contemporary photography from the past year, the Awards give vast exposure and opportunity to photographers worldwide. Sony supports the Awards to help the continued development of photographic culture by giving a global platform to today’s talent.

Entry to the Awards is completely free and photographers are judged anonymously by a panel of industry leading judges. Photographers worldwide are invited to submit to the Awards’ four competitions:

Professional – outstanding bodies of work between 5-10 images across ten categories
Open – rewarding the world’s best single images across ten categories
Youth – a monthly brief for emerging talent aged 12-19
Student – for photography students across the globe

The National Awards program will also reward local photographic talent.

Full competition and categories descriptions can be found at Sony World Photography Awards

Deadlines for submissions across the Awards’ four competitions are:

Professional: 14 January 2022
Open: 7 January 2022
Student: 30 November 2021
Youth: 31 December 2021

All category winners of the Professional, Open, Youth and Student competitions will receive digital imaging equipment from Sony. In addition, cash prizes will be presented to the Photographer of the Year and to the Open Photographer of the Year. All winning and shortlisted photographers’ works will be exhibited at the annual Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition in London and will then be toured internationally. The winning images will also be published in the annual Awards’ book.
