Ice Cream Month

6th July 2023

Each July we celebrate Ice Cream Month. It is a time to indulge in this frozen delicacy and honour its cultural significance. Ice cream is undoubtedly one of the most beloved desserts across the globe. Its rich, creamy texture and endless variety of flavours make it a treat that brings joy to people of all ages!

Cool Beginnings

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as Ice Cream Month. This presidential proclamation aimed to recognise the positive impact of ice cream on various economies across the globe and the joy it brings to millions. It also celebrates the dairy industry’s contribution to the agricultural sector.

But where did ice cream originate? Ice cream has a long and fascinating history. The origins of this frozen dessert date back to ancient China, where it was believed that the emperors enjoyed a frozen mixture of milk and rice. Later, during the Roman Empire, Emperor Nero reportedly sent his slaves to the mountains to collect snow, which was then mixed with fruit and honey to create an early form of ice cream.

As time passed, ice cream spread across Europe, and in the 17th Century, it gained popularity in America. Ice cream shops began to emerge, and people started experimenting with different ingredients and flavours. It wasn’t until the 19th Century that ice cream production became more accessible to the masses, thanks to the invention of hand-cranked ice cream churns and commercial refrigeration.

Types of Ice Cream

Today, there is an extensive variety of ice creams available, each with its unique characteristics and production methods. Some popular types include:

Gelato: Originating from Italy, gelato is made with a higher proportion of milk to cream than traditional ice cream, resulting in a denser and smoother texture.

Sorbet: A dairy-free option, sorbet is made from fruit juice or puree, sugar, and water. It offers a refreshing and lighter experience.

Frozen Yogurt: A healthier alternative to traditional ice cream, frozen yogurt is made with yogurt cultures and offers a tangy and refreshing taste.

Popular Flavours

Ice cream enthusiasts have countless flavours to choose from, catering to a wide range of preferences. Some of the most popular include:

Vanilla: The classic and versatile flavour that serves as a base for many ice cream creations.

Chocolate: A timeless favourite, chocolate ice cream satisfies the cravings of cocoa lovers.

Strawberry: Bursting with the sweetness of fresh strawberries, this fruity flavour is a summer staple.

Mint Chocolate Chip: The refreshing combination of mint and chocolate creates a delightful contrast in every spoonful.

Cookies and Cream: A crowd-pleaser, cookies and cream offers a delightful mix of crunchy chocolate cookie pieces in a creamy base.
