Easter Traditions and Symbolism

Easter, a ‘moveable feast’, doesn’t fall on a fixed date but is instead determined by the first Sunday after the full moon that occurs on or soonest after March 21st. Its symbolism is deeply rooted in the Jewish Passover, with many languages having similar words for Easter and Passover. Easter customs vary globally, including attending church services, decorating Easter eggs, Easter egg hunts, parades and gift exchanges.

Eggs-cellent Trivia!

Here are some fascinating Easter facts:

  • Did you know that every child in the UK receives an average of 8.8 Easter eggs every year? That’s double their recommended calorie intake for a whole week!
  • When it comes to devouring chocolate Easter Bunnies, 76% of people bite off the ears first, while 5% go for the feet, and 4% opt for the tail.
  • On average, households in the UK spend £75 on Easter each year.
  • The UK’s first chocolate egg was crafted in 1873 by Fry’s of Bristol, marking the beginning of a sweet Easter tradition.

Easter Recipe: Eggscellent Cupcakes

Ingredients

  • 175g (1 1/2 cups) self-raising flour
  • 175g (3/4 cup) caster sugar
  • 175g (3/4 cup) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • A pinch of salt
  • White pre-made icing
  • Pastel-coloured sprinkles
  • Mini chocolate eggs

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a cupcake tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and caster sugar until pale and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and mix until combined.
  4. Sift the self-raising flour and salt into the bowl, then gently fold the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
  5. Stir in the milk to loosen the batter slightly.
  6. Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each one about two-thirds full.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre of a cupcake comes out clean.
  8. Once baked, remove the cupcakes from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack.
  9. Once the cupcakes are cooled, frost each one with icing using a piping bag or a spatula.
  10. Sprinkle pastel-coloured sprinkles generously on top, adding a festive touch to each cupcake.
  11. Finally, place some mini chocolate eggs on each cupcake.
  12. Serve and enjoy with your loved ones!
