Guy Fawkes Night in Tunbridge Wells

30th October 2024

As the nights draw in and the air turns crisp, Tunbridge Wells gears up for one of its most anticipated autumn events – Guy Fawkes Night! This historic celebration, also known as Bonfire Night, commemorates the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

A History of Guy Fawkes Night

The Gunpowder Plot was a failed attempt to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. The conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, smuggled 36 barrels of gunpowder into a cellar beneath the House of Lords. However, an anonymous tip-off led authorities to Fawkes on the eve of November 5th, guarding the explosives.

In a time when political and religious tensions ran high, the event marked a significant moment in British history, leading to an annual celebration that has evolved over the centuries.

Fun Facts

  • The term “guy,” meaning a man or a fellow, originated from the effigies of Guy Fawkes burned on bonfires. Over time, these effigies became known simply as “guys.”

  • The famous rhyme “Remember, remember, the fifth of November” has been used since the early 17th century to commemorate the failure of the Gunpowder Plot.
