The Origins of Valentine’s Day

The history of Valentine’s Day is a blend of legend, romance and mystery. The day is named after Saint Valentine, but who was he?

The most well-known story dates back to 3rd-century Rome. At the time, Emperor Claudius II believed that single men made better soldiers, so he banned marriage for young men. But one man defied the emperor’s decree  – Saint Valentine, a kind-hearted priest who secretly married couples in love.

Unfortunately, Valentine was caught and sentenced to death. While imprisoned, he is said to have fallen in love with the jailer’s daughter. Before his execution on 14th February, he sent her a heartfelt letter signed “from your Valentine” – giving birth to what we now know as the first-ever Valentine’s card.

Today, Valentine’s Day is a global celebration of love, bringing people together to express affection, gratitude and devotion.

Love to Spend

The UK’s love for Valentine’s Day is as strong as ever! In 2024, it was estimated that a staggering 91% of Brits celebrated in some way, with a total spend of approximately £1.37 billion.

  • Men spend more than women – The average spend for men is £35, while women typically spend £10 or less on their partners.
  • London is the most romantic city – Londoners splurge an average of £40 on their loved ones.
  • East Midlands spends the least – The lowest average spend in the UK is £16.
  • Gen Z leads the way – Younger generations are spending the most, with Gen Z averaging £41 per person, followed by millennials at £32.
  • Cards remain the most popular gift – 65% of people exchange Valentine’s cards, while 21% opt for flowers, with red roses still being the top choice.
  • Interestingly, Valentine’s Day is no longer just for couples – many now use it as a day to celebrate friends, pets and even themselves!
